Bill Croskey-Merritt had a big influence on the Commanders as a late-round rookie. Can Kaytron Allen do the same?

When the Washington Commanders selected Bill Croskey-Merritt with the 245th overall pick last year, few expected him to make such an immediate impact. Yet there he was, churning out 805 yards and eight touchdowns on an efficient 4.6 yards per carry. Now, the Commanders are hoping lightning strikes twice with another late-round running back: Penn State's Kaytron Allen.

Allen, a powerful and productive rusher, brings a style that could complement Washington's backfield perfectly. Assistant GM Lance Newmark couldn't hide his excitement when describing what Allen brings to the table. "He has true move-the-line-of-scrimmage pile push," Newmark said. "A power player, with a lot of defenders falling backwards as they're bringing him down. There's just a lot of power and dirty yards gained that maybe you don't always appreciate, but they mean a lot."

What makes Allen particularly intriguing is his self-belief. When asked about his game, the rookie didn't mince words. "I feel like I can do everything as a running back," Allen stated confidently. "I feel like people don't respect it enough, but I feel like I can do it all: strength, toughness, physicality, everything. Put the rock in my hands, I'm ready to go."

Allen joins a crowded backfield featuring Croskey-Merritt, Rachaad White, and Jerome Ford. But if his college production and mindset are any indication, don't be surprised if he carves out a meaningful role sooner rather than later. The Commanders have shown they're willing to let late-round picks earn their stripes, and Allen appears ready to do just that.

As rookie minicamp approaches, all eyes will be on how this power runner adapts to the NFL game. If his confidence and work ethic match his physical tools, Washington might have found another diamond in the rough.
