The Peoria Rivermen's quest for the SPHL President's Cup hit a significant roadblock Saturday night, as a monumental performance by Knoxville goaltender Stephen Mundinger stole Game 2 of the semifinals. The 3-1 loss before a home crowd of 2,894 at Carver Arena evens the best-of-five series at 1-1, shifting the pressure to the Rivermen as the scene moves to Knoxville for the next two contests.
The difference in a tightly contested game was starkly simple: a 6-foot-8, 250-pound wall in the Knoxville net. Mundinger was spectacular, turning away a barrage of high-quality Rivermen chances. "He was unbelievable," Rivermen head coach Jean-Guy Trudel stated. "He took the game over for them. We had probably 25 Grade-A quality chances at him... I was thrilled with how we played, but now we're going to see how we respond."
Peoria's own netminder, Nick Latinovich, was strong in his own right, having allowed just six goals in four playoff games—a performance that Trudel noted "should have been enough to win." The Rivermen drew even in the first period on an emotional goal from captain Alec Baer, his first of the postseason, who buried a rebound to answer an early Knoxville tally.
However, critical defensive lapses proved costly for the second consecutive night. The game-winner came when Knoxville's Eric Olson found himself alone in the slot and fired an uncontested shot past Latinovich. An empty-net goal in the final minutes sealed the Ice Bears' victory.
As the series pivots to hostile territory, the Rivermen's championship mettle will be tested. They generated the chances but must find a way to solve Mundinger and tighten up defensively to reclaim control of this semifinal battle. The path to the finals just got a lot tougher.
