The San Diego Padres faced their first major test of the season when starting second baseman Jake Cronenworth landed on the seven-day injured list with a concussion nine days ago. The timing couldn't have been worse—the bats had already gone cold against quality pitching, and losing Cronenworth threatened to paralyze the offense completely. A noticeable void appeared at the bottom of the order, leaving the Friars scrambling to fill the gap.
Concussions are notoriously tricky, often requiring more than the standard two-week IL stint. The organization remains optimistic, but rushing Cronenworth back would be reckless. For now, the two-time All-Star's return timeline is uncertain, leaving manager Craig Stammen to get creative.
Stammen made a bold move: sacrificing defense to spark the offense. He inserted Nick Castellanos into right field and shifted Fernando Tatis Jr. over to second base. The results, however, have been mixed. Castellanos has shown limited range in the outfield, and his bat has looked slow through the zone. That said, he did deliver a game-tying homer in the series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals—a game the Padres won in extra innings. This is Castellanos' chance to prove his value, and it may take a few more starts before he regains his stroke as a lethal run-producer.
Fortunately, Miguel Andujar has stepped up in a big way. He's hitting .289 with three home runs and 12 RBI in 114 at-bats, stabilizing the middle of the order. His only drawback is a strikeout rate of 19.5%, well above his career average of 15.8%, but his production has been a welcome bright spot.
Thrilling, late-inning victories have become the Padres' trademark this season. They've won 11 games in the seventh inning or later—a stark contrast to the five such wins they managed in 2025. That late-game magic now accounts for nearly half of their 25 wins. Gavin Sheets has been a hero in the ninth inning alone, hitting three go-ahead home runs. As the Friars navigate Cronenworth's absence, they'll need that clutch performance to continue.
