The senior class at Smoky Mountain has been building toward this moment for years. On May 11, their patience and perseverance paid off in a big way.
The Mustangs girls' soccer team dominated North Gaston from the opening whistle, finally breaking through for their first NCHSAA playoff victory since 2017. The 6-0 win in Sylva was a statement that this program is back.
For a while, it looked like it might be one of those frustrating nights. Smoky Mountain peppered the North Gaston goalkeeper with shot after shot in the first half. When the ball wasn't saved, it seemed to ricochet off every part of the goal except the back of the net.
Then came the breakthrough. In the 21st minute, junior Macy Craft slid a shot into the back of the goal on a breakaway, finally giving the Mustangs the lead they deserved.
Just before halftime, the senior class showed its experience. Isabel Brun found Ali Klaire Nicholson running free down the right sideline. Nicholson calmly flicked the ball over the goalkeeper's head and into the left corner of the net, doubling the lead.
That goal opened the floodgates. The Mustangs (13-9-2) poured in five more goals in the second half, turning a tight game into a convincing rout over No. 23 North Gaston (4-12-3).
For a program that had been waiting since 2017 for another taste of postseason success, this win was about more than just advancing. It was validation for a senior class that has helped restore the winning culture at Smoky Mountain.
The Mustangs now turn their attention to the second round, where they'll face No. 7 Forestview (17-2-1) on May 14. If their senior leadership continues to shine, this playoff run could be just getting started.
