The 2026 NFL Draft was shaping up to be a quiet one early on. Through the first five picks, the board was falling as expected, and no trades had been made. But then, the New Orleans Saints—without even making a pick—helped shake things up in a major way.
The Cleveland Browns found themselves in a prime position at No. 6, and thanks to some behind-the-scenes pressure from the Saints, they ended up with a nice haul. The Kansas City Chiefs, sitting at No. 9, grew nervous that their top target—LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane—wouldn't make it to them. So, they made an aggressive move, trading up three spots with the Browns to secure Delane at No. 6.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Chiefs' internal draft simulator flagged both Washington (No. 7) and New Orleans (No. 8) as potential threats to snag Delane. But it was the Saints who really caught their attention. Despite heavy pre-draft buzz that New Orleans was targeting a wide receiver, Kansas City sensed the Saints might be using that as a smokescreen. The Saints had legitimate interest in cornerback help, and Delane—a local LSU product—would have been a perfect fit in the Big Easy.
New Orleans ultimately stuck with a receiver at No. 8, but their interest in a corner was no bluff. They quickly signed Martin Emerson in free agency after failing to land one in the draft. Had Delane slipped to No. 8, the Saints might have pulled the trigger.
That uncertainty was enough for the Chiefs to act. They jumped from No. 9 to No. 6, sending a third-round and fifth-round pick to Cleveland to ensure they landed Delane. For the Browns, it was a win-win: they still got a player they liked later on, plus extra draft capital. For the Saints, their interest in a cornerback—real or perceived—helped shake up the first round without them even making a move.
It's a reminder that in the NFL Draft, sometimes the biggest plays happen before you even step to the podium.
