Sometimes the best comebacks aren't on the field—they're behind the microphone. Rich Shertenlieb knows this better than most. After a career that saw him help launch 98.5 The Sports Hub into Boston sports radio dominance, he faced an unexpected detour when a promising morning show gig on music radio was abruptly cut short by company layoffs. But true to the resilient spirit of Boston sports fans, Shertenlieb refused to stay down.
Now, over a year after leaving the market, he's back where he belongs: hosting afternoon drive on WEEI, ready to reclaim his place in the city's passionate sports conversation.
"I love Boston sports. It's the format that I'm the most comfortable with," Shertenlieb said. "I've been lucky enough to do sports radio at the highest levels, and I know that Mike Thomas programs the format better than anyone else."
It's a full-circle moment that even Shertenlieb might not have predicted back in 2009. When he first joined the Sports Hub, he was blunt about his feelings toward the competition. "I remember telling Mike Thomas and Mark Hannon that I hate WEEI and everything that they do," he recalled. "I can't do what they do over there. They're the angriest people I've ever heard discussing things that bring me joy."
That competitive fire helped build a powerhouse. But time changes things, and so do relationships. Many of the people who built that success at the Sports Hub now walk the halls at WEEI. For Shertenlieb, the decision to return to sports radio came down to something simple: passion and trust. "He's putting a lot of resources into the program. When you have a situation like that, it's tough to say no."
The new gig also reunites him with familiar faces, including former New England Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson—a pairing that brings together the insight of a Super Bowl champion with the sharp wit of a seasoned broadcaster. It's a lineup that feels less like a fresh start and more like a homecoming. And for Boston sports fans, that's exactly the kind of comeback story worth tuning into.
