Portland's Lillard picks give them real trade leverage.

The Portland Trail Blazers didn't make a first-round pick in this year's draft, but that hasn't stopped them from being one of the most intriguing teams to watch this offseason. After finishing 42-40 and sneaking into the playoffs, the Blazers have their sights set on something much bigger: Giannis Antetokounmpo.

According to multiple league sources speaking with NBA insider Jake Fischer, Portland is expected to be a prime trade suitor for the two-time MVP this summer. And here's the kicker—they actually have the leverage to make it happen.

Remember the Damian Lillard trade? That deal gave the Blazers control over the Bucks' first-round picks in 2028, 2029, and 2030. For Milwaukee, getting those picks back would be the most valuable asset in any Giannis trade. That leverage gives Portland a seat at a table most rebuilding teams can only dream of.

New owner Tom Dundon isn't shy about his ambitions either. During his introductory news conference, Dundon said he plans to be "more aggressive than most" when chasing star talent—and that's not just talk. Blazers GM Joe Cronin echoed that sentiment, telling reporters the team is open to a major move, but only "at the right price point."

So what would a trade package look like? Any deal built around Antetokounmpo would likely include Jerami Grant's contract, valued at $34.2 million next season before a $36.4 million player option in 2027-28. But Giannis is carrying a $58.5 million salary, so additional salary matching through a multi-team structure is almost certainly required. Portland engaged in trade conversations with Milwaukee as recently as the week before February's trade deadline, though teams ultimately concluded the Bucks weren't ready to move him.

The real obstacle? What Giannis wants. Per Fischer, Portland may not rank high on his preferred destination list. But in the NBA, leverage and assets can change everything—and right now, the Blazers have both.
