When a former world champion returns to the fold, the entire paddock takes notice. Ott Tanak's new role as a test driver for Toyota's 2027 World Rally Championship car is already generating excitement—and according to nine-time champion Sebastien Ogier, the benefits go far beyond just fresh eyes on the development.

Tanak, who clinched his only world title with Toyota in 2019, has been out of the WRC driver's seat this season. But the Estonian hasn't been idle. While mentoring close friend and current Toyota driver Takamoto Katsuta, he's also been logging valuable miles behind the wheel of the Japanese manufacturer's all-new challenger—built to the WRC's upcoming technical regulations. Recent testing sessions on both asphalt and gravel, including a stint in Spain last week, have already put Tanak's experience to work.

For Ogier, the move is a smart one. "We have been aware of it for a little while, but Ott still has some hunger and some wish to drive a bit more," he said at Rally Islas Canarias. "The feedback from Ott can always be interesting—I'm pretty sure about that."

The timing couldn't be better. With Toyota's current drivers juggling a packed race calendar, having a dedicated test driver like Tanak helps lighten the load. "As we have a busy calendar, it is maybe good for the current drivers," Ogier added, noting he himself hasn't yet tested the 2027 car. "Having Ott take on that role means we can focus on racing while he helps shape the future of the car."

Of course, Tanak's return to Toyota has also sparked plenty of speculation about a potential full-time comeback in 2025—especially if a seat opens up. For now, though, his focus is on helping build a championship-winning machine from the ground up. And for a team that already knows what he's capable of, that's a very good thing.
