When you think of Indiana football, you don't usually think of Heisman Trophy winners or No. 1 overall NFL Draft picks. But thanks to a little help from billionaire alum Mark Cuban, the Hoosiers are rewriting history—and it all started with one pivotal phone call.

Before Fernando Mendoza became a Heisman-winning national champion quarterback at Indiana and the top prospect for the 2026 NFL Draft, he was a Miami native stuck in a tough spot. After announcing his decision to leave California, Mendoza spent ten days weighing offers from powerhouse programs like Georgia, Missouri, and UCLA. As the Hoosiers prepared for their first-round College Football Playoff loss at Notre Dame, the clock was ticking.

That's when Mark Cuban stepped in.

During an October 2025 interview with Front Office Sports, Cuban revealed that he had been sitting in a suite with Indiana's athletic director Scott Dolson and president Pamela Witten during that heartbreaking postseason loss to the Fighting Irish. The conversation quickly turned to roster building for the next season.

"We started talking, and he's like, 'We've got this quarterback that we really, really like and that we think would be great, we just need a little more,'" Cuban recalled. "I'm like, 'How much is a little bit?' He told me, and I said, okay, we're on a roll, so I'll put up the money to get this quarterback."

Mendoza wasn't just any transfer—he was a four-star prospect ranked as the fourth-best quarterback available in the portal that cycle, following two standout seasons as a starter for the Golden Bears. But Cuban already had a connection to the Mendoza family. He had met Fernando's younger brother, Alberto, then a true freshman backup quarterback at Indiana, during a Dallas Mavericks-Miami Heat game in South Beach. The two had even interacted behind the bench during a game that season.

Fernando Mendoza signed with Indiana on Christmas Eve 2024, just days after the Hoosiers' season ended. The rest, as they say, is history. He went on to throw for 3,535 yards, 41 touchdowns, and a nation-best 182.9 passing efficiency during an undefeated campaign, earning Heisman honors and leading Indiana to its first national championship.

When asked to reveal the exact dollar amount that sealed the deal, Cuban simply pleaded the Fifth. But for Hoosiers fans, the price of greatness was clearly worth it. Whether you're a player chasing a dream or a fan looking to rep your team, remember: sometimes the biggest plays happen off the field.
