Every footballer dreams of a Wembley moment, and for Manchester City’s Nico O'Reilly, that dream has already come true once this season. Now, the 21-year-old local lad is hungry for an encore.
O'Reilly etched his name into City folklore back in March, scoring a brilliant brace in the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal to help lift the trophy. This Saturday, he returns to the iconic stadium for the FA Cup final against Chelsea, aiming to make it a glorious double.
The stakes couldn't be higher for Pep Guardiola's side. With the Premier League title still within reach, the next ten days will define their entire season. City could finish with one, two, or even three trophies by next Sunday. For O'Reilly, though, personal ambition adds extra fuel to the fire—he's determined to earn a spot in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for this summer's World Cup.
"He has probably been the best left-sided player this season," said Garry Riley, the scout who first discovered O'Reilly at age six. "There are plenty of good left-sided players, but to see him get into that World Cup squad would be unbelievable."
According to Riley, O'Reilly's talent was impossible to ignore even as a young boy playing for Moston Tigers and Failsworth Dynamos. Blessed with a "great left foot," superb ball control, and relentless determination, he quickly attracted attention from Manchester United, Liverpool, Everton, and Blackburn Rovers. Local scout Joe Yates first recommended him, sparking a journey that would lead to City's academy.
"It was so competitive back then—it still is now," Riley recalled. "All the top clubs in the North West want the best boys. You have to work hard with the parents, stay in touch, and build a team around the player. Getting these boys through is a massive job, but it's all about teamwork."
Growing up in Collyhurst, O'Reilly idolized the greats—Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Ronaldinho. At City, he looked up to Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Agüero. Now, the boy from the stands is the one taking centre stage, and with Wembley calling once more, he's ready to write another chapter in his remarkable story.
