In the high-stakes world of the NBA, where egos can clash and locker rooms can fracture, the Oklahoma City Thunder have discovered a secret weapon. He doesn't lead the league in scoring or grab the most rebounds, but Jaylin Williams might just be the most valuable player on the roster when it comes to team chemistry.
When Jared McCain joined the Thunder in February, he hadn't even landed in Oklahoma City before fans were already sending him a message: find Jaylin Williams. The reason? TikTok. Both players are active on the app, and fans knew they'd make great content together. Sure enough, by March 1, Williams and McCain were dancing to "Just The Way You Are" by Milky, and they've posted two more videos since then.
"That's my guy," McCain says. "It's just good vibes and good energy with him, always."
Not every Thunder player wants to be a TikTok star, of course. Isaiah Hartenstein once retreated to his hotel room when he spotted McCain and Williams filming in the hallway during a road trip. But that's exactly the point. Every player on the Thunder has a different personality, different interests, and different quirks. Yet they all share one thing: they get along with Williams.
Head coach Mark Daigneault puts it simply: "He's a tremendous team guy. The thing that's always amazed me about him as a teammate is his relatability with everybody on the team. There's literally no one that he doesn't have a connection with."
Williams wears his heart on his sleeve, just like he wears the place that shaped him. His right arm is covered in a tattoo sleeve paying tribute to his hometown of Fort Smith, Arkansas—a small city where the southern hospitality is as warm as the summer heat. There, everybody knows everybody, and everybody deserves to feel included. That's the same philosophy Williams brings to the Thunder locker room.
In a league built on superstars, the Thunder have built something different: a team that truly sticks together. And at the center of it all is Jaylin Williams, the glue guy who proves that sometimes, the most important stat doesn't appear on a box score.
