How Jackson Sellers developed into two-way star for Hayesville baseball

Hayesville baseball's two-way star led the Yellow Jackets past Swain County in the NCHSAA playoffs May 8, hitting a home run and striking out 11.

In the small town of Hayesville, a two-way baseball star is making a name for himself—and it's not just because of his powerful swing or his blazing fastball. Jackson Sellers, a senior for the Hayesville Yellow Jackets, delivered a performance that will be remembered for years to come during the NCHSAA 2A playoffs on May 8.

Facing Swain County, Sellers didn't waste any time. In the first inning, with an 0-2 count, he crushed a pitch deep to left-center field for a three-run home run—his third of the season. That blast gave Hayesville all the run support they needed, especially with Sellers himself on the mound. He struck out 11 batters over the game, allowing just two runs, and drove in five runs at the plate. It was a true showcase of what it means to be a two-way player.

"There's no better feeling," Sellers said after the 9-2 victory. "Carrying my team, and being a leader for this team—I'm excited for what we can do in the next round."

The win was Hayesville's 16th in a row, a remarkable streak that has the Yellow Jackets (16-4) rolling into the third round of the playoffs. But it wasn't easy. After dominating Swain County twice in the regular season (16-1 and 10-0), Sellers admitted the team came out a bit lackadaisical in the field, allowing the score to tighten to 3-2. That's when Sellers, with two runners on base, struck out three straight batters to shut the door.

"We really had to bear down as a team to get this win," Sellers said. "It was a tough one, but we got the bats going and it went from there."

Sellers has been one of Western North Carolina's most consistent two-way threats, earning All-WNC honors as a utilityman each of the last two seasons. So far this year, he's driven in 37 runs at the plate and struck out 85 batters on the mound. His dad, Joe Jack Sellers, who also happens to be Hayesville's coach, says Jackson is the hardest working kid he's ever seen—and that's not just a father's bias.

"I love the whole aspect of the game," Jackson Sellers said. "I'm blessed to be able to hit, pitch, and play in the field. I just love it. There's no words to it."

Hayesville baseball has a proud history, with state championships in 1983 and 1988 and eight Western Regional titles. But it's been nearly 40 years since their last regional championship. If any Yellow Jackets team can break that drought, it might just be this one—led by a player who can do it all.
