Florida State softball is heading into the 2026 NCAA Tournament with serious momentum. The Seminoles claimed both the ACC regular-season and tournament titles, posting an impressive 49-8 record and earning the No. 9 national seed. But as they prepare to host the Tallahassee Regional for the 12th straight season, there’s a familiar weight on their shoulders: the last five postseasons have brought them tantalizingly close to the ultimate prize, only to fall just short.
Hosting a regional for the 12th consecutive year puts FSU in elite company. Only Alabama, Oklahoma, and UCLA can match that streak. The Seminoles open regional play Friday at noon on ESPNU against Stetson, with UCF and Jacksonville State also vying for a spot in the next round.
On paper, FSU’s program résumé is the envy of nearly every team in the country. But the last five NCAA Tournaments tell a more complicated story—one of soaring highs and crushing lows.
It all started with a bang. Florida State stormed to the Women’s College World Series finals, pushing powerhouse Oklahoma to the limit. After taking Game One, the Seminoles saw the Sooners rally to win Games Two and Three, snatching the championship away. It was a heartbreaking finish, but it cemented FSU as a national contender.
The following season, expectations hit a fever pitch. Armed with a 54-7 record and the No. 2 national seed, the Seminoles looked poised for another deep run. Instead, they suffered one of the most stunning exits in program history. For the first time since 2012, FSU was eliminated in the regional round, dropping a pair of games to Mississippi State on the final day at JoAnne Graf Field—including a gut-wrenching 4-3 loss in a winner-take-all finale that ended their season prematurely.
But true champions bounce back. The Seminoles returned to the WCWS the very next season, once again reaching the championship series. And once again, they ran into Oklahoma. The Sooners took the title with 5-3 and 3-1 wins, handing FSU its second national runner-up finish in three years. Two trips to the sport’s biggest stage in three seasons is a remarkable achievement—and a remarkable source of frustration.
Now, as the 2026 tournament begins, the Seminoles are armed with experience, resilience, and the hunger to finally break through. The path won’t be easy, but if the last five years have taught us anything, it’s that Florida State knows how to fight—and how to come back stronger.
