When Tottenham Hotspur looked destined for a relegation scrap, few could have predicted the revival sparked by Roberto de Zerbi. After a turbulent season that saw three different managers at the helm—each with wildly contrasting philosophies—Spurs have suddenly found their footing. Back-to-back wins, including a gutsy 2-1 victory at Champions League-chasing Aston Villa, have injected life into a squad that was sinking fast.

So, what’s changed? For starters, De Zerbi has brought clarity. His tactical system simplifies decision-making for players, replacing confusion with confidence. The squad and their supporters now have reason to believe the tide has turned, and survival is within reach. Much of the credit belongs to the Italian coach, who has reshaped this team in a remarkably short time.

While De Zerbi is often lauded for his possession-based, build-from-the-back approach, it was Tottenham’s defensive organization that stole the show against Villa. Unai Emery’s side typically builds short and centrally before accelerating play into open spaces—a tactic not unlike De Zerbi’s own philosophy. To neutralize this, the Spurs boss deployed an aggressive pressing scheme designed to clog the middle of the pitch.

Richarlison was the linchpin of this plan. The Brazilian forward positioned himself to block passes into Villa’s right center midfielder, Lamare Bogarde, while angling his body to discourage goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from playing down the right flank. Alongside him, Conor Gallagher shadowed Youri Tielemans, ensuring Villa’s creative outlet was smothered. At times, Richarlison pressed Martinez directly, with Rodrigo Bentancur stepping up from midfield to take over marking duties on Bogarde. The result? Villa’s central midfielders were effectively cut off from receiving the ball.

The supporting cast also played crucial roles. Randal Kolo Muani frequently stationed himself between defenders Tyrone Mings and Ian Maatsen. When Martinez played to Mings, Kolo Muani pressed with intensity, angling his run to block any pass to Maatsen. If Maatsen looked like he might receive the ball freely, right-back Pedro Porro pushed forward to close the gap. It was a coordinated, high-energy effort that disrupted Villa’s rhythm from the first whistle.

This newfound defensive discipline, paired with De Zerbi’s trademark attacking ideas, has transformed Spurs into a side that fights for every inch. For a team that was once drifting toward disaster, the revival is nothing short of remarkable. And if this performance is any indication, Tottenham’s future—at least for now—looks far brighter than it did just a few weeks ago.
