Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh ended one of the most grueling slumps in baseball this season on Tuesday night—and he did it with a little help from a teammate's unconventional advice.
Raleigh snapped a 38 at-bat hitless streak, the longest in the majors this year, with a single in the seventh inning of Seattle's 7-2 win over the Houston Astros. The drought stretched all the way back to April 27, meaning Raleigh had gone over two weeks without a base knock. He came just four at-bats short of tying the franchise record of 42, set by Jarred Kelenic in 2021.
The hitless stretch was no secret in the Mariners' dugout. When Raleigh finally connected, his teammates celebrated by pretending to hand him the ball as if it were his first career hit. (Spoiler: It wasn't the actual ball—teammate Josh Naylor grabbed one from a bag on the bench—but Raleigh, unaware of the swap, plans to keep it anyway.)
What finally turned things around? A full uniform shower.
After Monday night's game, pitcher Logan Gilbert suggested Raleigh take a shower while still wearing his full uniform to "wash off the bad mojo or juju." Raleigh took the advice, and less than 24 hours later, he was back in the hit column. It's the kind of superstition that baseball players live by—and this time, it paid off.
For a player who finished runner-up in 2025 AL MVP voting, the slump was a tough stretch. But with a little creativity and team support, Raleigh found a way to turn the page. Whether the full uniform shower becomes a regular ritual remains to be seen—but for now, it's a winning formula.
