The Indianapolis Colts may have found a defensive chess piece in safety AJ Haulcy, selected during the 2026 NFL Draft. Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo is already envisioning how this versatile rookie can transform the secondary into a more unpredictable unit.

Haulcy brings a rare blend of experience from both the box and deep coverage. Over his college career, he logged 1,030 snaps near the line of scrimmage and 1,383 snaps as a deep safety. This dual-threat capability is exactly what modern NFL defenses crave.

What does this mean for the Colts? Simply put, it complicates things for opposing quarterbacks. With Haulcy and veteran Cam Bynum on the field, pre-snap alignments become unreliable indicators of post-snap reality. Where a safety lines up before the snap might not be where he ends up when the quarterback reaches the top of his drop. This disguise factor can force quarterbacks into hesitation and mistakes.

Anarumo couldn't hide his excitement about having multiple versatile safeties. "It just makes it that much easier," he told Roundtable Sports. "I think that the way offenses are these days, where they're attacking all parts of the field, you want guys to be able to have the ability to not only cover a short zone, but be able to cover a deep zone and not just say, 'Hey, he's pigeonholed to doing this one thing.' The more guys that can do more jobs physically—because that's what it starts with—the better we'll be. I think we've got a chance to have that."

Beyond his positional flexibility, Haulcy brings impressive ball production. Over the last two seasons, he recorded eight interceptions and 12 pass deflections, demonstrating a knack for creating turnovers that can swing games.

Still, Anarumo is keeping expectations measured for the rookie. While the Colts are bullish on Haulcy's potential, the transition to the NFL playbook and speed of the game is a significant step. "I think we'll see how it goes," Anarumo said when asked if Haulcy's versatility could open up more opportunities for Bynum. "Cam has the ability to do a number of different things. Hopefully, A.J. does as well. We just got to see."

For Colts fans and defensive purists alike, the promise of a secondary that can morph and adapt week to week is an exciting prospect. If Haulcy adjusts quickly, this defense could become a nightmare for offensive coordinators across the league.
