The spring sports season is heating up, and Monday delivered a slate of thrilling local matchups, headlined by a commanding performance from Horseheads baseball.
In a key divisional clash, the Blue Raiders secured an 8-2 victory over rival Elmira, taking the first game of their three-game series. Horseheads set the tone early with aggressive offense, getting RBI singles from Lyncoln Bennett and Mason Markle in the first and third innings. Markle and Hunter Matkosky added to the RBI total, while Bennett and five other Raiders crossed the plate, showcasing a balanced attack. Keegan Monahan led the charge at the dish, going an efficient 3-for-5.
The win was anchored by a strong pitching performance. Starter Cooper Ball dominated over six innings, racking up eight strikeouts before Mason Markle came in to close the door. For Elmira, Aedan Palmer delivered six quality innings with five strikeouts, and he and Carter Sherman drove in the team's only runs.
The series continues with high stakes as Horseheads hosts Elmira on Wednesday before the finale in Elmira on Friday, with both games scheduled for a 5 p.m. first pitch.
On the softball diamond, two local powerhouses continued their undefeated marches. The Corning Hawks (6-0) remained perfect with a staggering 23-0 win over Horseheads, powered by home runs from Lauren DeRosa, Matti Johnston, and Keana Mann. Johnston was also brilliant in the circle, throwing three innings of one-hit ball with six strikeouts.
Meanwhile, the Schuyler Storm (5-0) stayed flawless with a 10-0 shutout of Elmira Notre Dame, fueled by a phenomenal all-around performance from sophomore Paige Ells. Ells drove in seven runs on three hits—a single, a double, and a three-run inside-the-park homer. She then took her dominance to the mound, pitching a complete-game shutout with 14 strikeouts, her third consecutive shutout this season.
Monday's action also included key results in baseball, softball, lacrosse, and flag football across Section IV, setting the stage for an exciting week of competition.
