Bobby Witt Jr. is doing everything right for the Kansas City Royals, but he's finding himself stranded on an island. The superstar shortstop, a dynamic force at the plate and in the field, has reached base in every single game this season. With a .365 on-base percentage and eight stolen bases, he's consistently putting himself in scoring position. Yet, through his first 63 at-bats, he had crossed home plate just once.
The issue isn't Witt's performance; it's a lack of support from the lineup behind him. Entering their series against Detroit, the Royals ranked among the league's worst offenses, averaging a meager 3.38 runs per game. Time and again, Witt gets on base only to watch the following batters fail to bring him home. In a recent 2-1 loss to the Tigers, he led off the sixth inning with a single, but was left standing as the next three hitters made quick outs.
His value was on full display defensively in that same game, where his elite athleticism saved multiple runs. He made a spectacular sprinting catch in shallow left-center to stifle a Tigers rally and later robbed an RBI with a diving snag. Witt is holding up his end of the bargain, providing Gold Glove-caliber defense while setting the table offensively. For the Royals to turn their season around, they need to find a way to drive in their best player. Until then, one of baseball's most exciting talents is waiting for a ride home.
