Danish men's tennis has been waiting for a Grand Slam champion since Frederik Nielsen's Wimbledon doubles triumph in 2012. In singles, the wait has been even longer—no Danish man has ever won a major in the Open Era. But Holger Rune is determined to change that narrative.
As he prepares for his ATP return at the Hamburg Open, Rune isn't just thinking about match wins. He's thinking about his legacy. In a candid interview with Andrés Tomás Rico, the young Dane shared his vision for transforming tennis in his home country.
"In Denmark, I was hoping to revitalise men's tennis, which was disappearing compared to football and handball," Rune said. "I think I've already achieved that by increasing interest in this sport."
But Rune's ambitions go beyond just growing the game. He wants fans to feel every moment of his journey. "I hope to give people a great experience when playing. It's not easy to explain, but the ideal scenario would be for all the spectators to feel the same emotions as me, as if we were living this adventure together."
In an era where data and analytics dominate tennis strategy, Rune believes personality still matters most. "The only original thing is the personality, what we bring to the court and the amount of emotion we share with those watching us," he explained.
His ultimate goal? Nothing less than a Grand Slam sweep. "In addition to being remembered as the first Dane to win all the Grand Slams, that's on my bucket list," Rune revealed. "I don't think we bring people together by putting cameras in the bathrooms, but by giving more of ourselves as players when we're on the court."
While Caroline Wozniacki has already put Danish tennis on the women's map, Rune is chasing a different kind of history—one that would make him Denmark's first men's singles Grand Slam champion and possibly its greatest tennis player ever. With his return just days away, the tennis world is watching to see if this bold young star can deliver on his promise.
