Hockey fans, there's plenty to celebrate this week! First up, Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman has been named No. 8 on the CHL's Top 50 Players of the Last 50 Years list—a fitting honor as the league marks its 50th anniversary season.
A Hockey Hall of Famer and three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Red Wings (plus a fourth ring as an executive), Yzerman's junior career with the Peterborough Petes was nothing short of spectacular. Drafted fourth overall in 1981, he racked up 155 points (63 goals, 92 assists) in just 114 regular-season games over two seasons. His rookie year saw 64 points in 58 games, but it was his sophomore season that truly shined: 91 points in 56 games, including 42 goals. After that, the Red Wings snatched him fourth overall in the 1983 NHL Draft—and the rest is history.
Yzerman went on to play 22 seasons in Detroit, amassing 1,755 points (692 goals, 1,063 assists) in 1,514 games, ranking eighth all-time in NHL scoring. He also holds the record as the longest-serving captain in NHL history, wearing the 'C' for 19 seasons. The CHL list honors the best players from the WHL, OHL, and QMJHL since 1975-76—and Yzerman's legacy is right at home among the elite.
But that's not all. Just one day after the PWHL announced an expansion franchise for Detroit, the league revealed its awards finalist schedule: Defender of the Year on May 20, Goaltender of the Year on May 21, and the Billie Jean King MVP Award on May 27. The winners will be announced June 16, alongside the 2026 PWHL Draft. With Detroit's new team on the horizon, it's an exciting time for hockey in the Motor City!
