Hockey roundup: Michigan State lands top-15 NHL prospect Ethan Belchetz

Windsor Spitfires power forward Ethan Belchetz announced his commitment to the Spartans on Instagram Tuesday morning.

Big news out of East Lansing! Michigan State hockey is stacking its roster with elite talent, and the latest addition is a true game-changer. Ethan Belchetz, a 6-foot-5 power forward for the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League, officially announced his commitment to the Spartans on Tuesday via Instagram.

Belchetz isn't just any recruit—he's a projected top-15 pick for the 2026 NHL Draft in Buffalo, set for June 26-27. That kind of potential is exactly what Michigan State needs to stay competitive on the national stage. In his rookie season with the Spitfires (2023-2024), he posted 17 goals and 38 points in 56 games. This year, he was on fire, leading the team with 34 goals before a broken left clavicle during practice in March sidelined him. He finished the season with 59 points in 57 games—a testament to his scoring touch and physical presence.

"Excited and honored to announce my commitment to play NCAA Division I hockey at Michigan State University," Belchetz shared on Instagram. "Huge thank you to my family, coaches, teammates, trainers, and everyone who has supported me throughout this journey." He added, "Grateful for the opportunity and excited for what's next."

Belchetz isn't the only blue-chip prospect heading to East Lansing. The Spartans also secured 6-foot-2 defenseman Chase Reid from the OHL's Soo Greyhounds. Reid is projected to go as high as No. 2 overall to the San Jose Sharks in the upcoming draft. He put up impressive numbers this season—18 goals and 48 points in 45 games—making him a formidable addition to Michigan State's blue line.

In other hockey action, the Buffalo Sabres evened their Eastern Conference second-round series against the Montreal Canadiens with a thrilling 3-2 win in Game 4. Zach Benson, celebrating his 21st birthday, scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period on the power play. Benson shook off a defender to corral a pass from Josh Doan and lift it past Canadiens goalie Jakub Dobes. Tage Thompson added a goal and an assist, while Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 28 saves to secure the win. Alex Newhook and Cole Caufield scored for Montreal, but the Sabres' late surge tied the series 2-2.

For fans of Michigan State and the NHL, this is an exciting time. The Spartans are building something special, and Belchetz's commitment is a major step forward. Whether you're cheering for the green and white or following the playoff action, there's plenty to keep an eye on—and maybe a new jersey to add to your collection.
