As the ice settles on another season, we sat down with Oregon Ducks Head Coach Jack Hyman for a post-season reflection. The conversation revealed a year defined by resilience, record-breaking success, and a foundation built for an exciting future.

When asked for a broad assessment, Coach Hyman was candid. "Broadly, I thought it was great," he began, with one clear caveat: the final ranking didn't meet the team's ambitions. However, peeling back the layers revealed a season of historic firsts for the program. "We achieved a lot of benchmarks that we set out at the beginning of the year," Hyman noted, highlighting a triumph of process over immediate results.

The path to that success was anything but smooth. The Ducks faced immediate adversity when six senior players quit just before training camp, abruptly shrinking the roster from 28 to 21 players. "We were shorthanded for a lot of the games and had a very young team," Hyman explained. Yet, against those odds, the team forged the best record and most wins in program history—a testament to the culture being built.

That youth was the defining characteristic of the squad, with an estimated 60-70% of regular players being freshmen or sophomores. This inexperience came with the expected growing pains. "The young guys bring a lot to the table, but they’re still young... sometimes immature and emotional. You take the good with the bad," Hyman stated. The good, however, was undeniable: the Ducks finished above .500 for the first time at this competitive level.

For Coach Hyman, the positives—commitment, character, and raw talent—far outweigh the negatives of inexperience. "They’ll only get better," he asserted, with the confidence of a coach who sees the bigger picture. With a strong returning core and new recruits set to complement them, the Ducks are not just looking back at a great year, but leaning into a future ripe with potential.
