The Hawaii Hilo Vulcans are set to make some noise in the NCAA Division II Softball Championships, kicking off the West Regional Round today at 9 a.m. against Cal State San Marcos in San Marcos, California. This double-elimination sub-regional is packed with talent, featuring a four-team bracket that also includes Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills—who will face off at noon. With 64 teams vying for the national title, every pitch counts from here on out.

This marks the Vulcans' seventh NCAA postseason appearance, a testament to the program's steady growth and competitive spirit. Fresh off a fourth-place finish at last week's PacWest Tournament, Hawaii Hilo is hungry to prove itself on the big stage. For fans of the game, this is the kind of high-stakes action that makes March—and now May—so thrilling in college sports.

Off the field, the University of Hawaii athletic community is celebrating academic excellence. Five UH tennis players, along with five standouts from Hawaii Hilo and Chaminade, have been named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. Representing the UH men's squad are Adriano Dzhenev and Timothy Li, while Allaire Berl, Makeilah Nepomuceno, and Sophie Rachor earned honors for the women's team.

At the Division II level, Hawaii Hilo's Iori Furuhata and Jaime Paquet (men's tennis) and Victoria Ricaurte-Cabas (women's tennis) received recognition. Chaminade's Selena Buttery and Isabella Minaudo also made the cut. To qualify, these student-athletes needed a 3.50 cumulative GPA or higher, at least sophomore standing, and participation in 90 percent of their team's matches—a true reflection of dedication both in the classroom and on the court.
