This past week, from May 4-10, marked a pivotal stretch for area softball teams as the postseason looms ever closer. With games growing more intense and scores tightening, athletes across Hillsdale County stepped up to deliver performances worth remembering.
Leading the charge was Hillsdale sophomore pitcher Kherington Ladd, who turned in a masterful no-hitter against Concord. In just five innings, Ladd struck out 14 batters, guiding the Hornets to a dominant 10-0 victory—a much-needed boost to start the month. Senior Layla Stebins provided key support with a hit and three runs scored, while Sydney Schmucker added a double, an RBI, and two runs behind the plate. Aubree Peck also crossed the plate twice for Hillsdale.
Ladd wasn't done there. In relief against Adrian Madison, she added six more strikeouts in a narrow 10-6 defeat. According to recorded stats, she is on pace to surpass 100 strikeouts for the season within her next two starts—a remarkable feat for the young ace.
Across the county, another standout pitcher reached a major milestone. Reading junior Leah Headley, now in her second year as the Rangers' full-time ace, surpassed 100 strikeouts for the season. Over three starts this past week, she racked up 13 strikeouts, adding to an already impressive resume that includes a no-hitter and three double-digit strikeout performances this year.
Camden-Frontier also made noise in a two-game series against Mendon. Senior Heidi Gawronski showcased her all-around game with two hits, two runs, and two stolen bases while also pitching. Riley Clark swiped three bags in the second game, and Paityn Vincent led the team with two RBIs, including a triple.
Hillsdale recognized Aubrey Peck as the team's top performer of the week after she delivered three hits and three RBIs in a single game. With the postseason approaching, these athletes are proving that the best softball of the season is yet to come.
