In a game full of momentum swings, Derek Hill delivered the decisive blow, smashing his second pinch-hit home run of the season to lift the Chicago White Sox to a 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.
The White Sox, riding a three-game winning streak, saw their early lead evaporate before Hill stepped to the plate in the eighth inning. With the score tied 5-5, Hill batted for Tristan Peters and crushed a low slider from Matt Strahm (1-1) 417 feet to left-center field. It marked Hill's third career pinch-hit homer and his second this season, following a game-tying blast against San Diego on May 3.
Chicago had built a 5-2 advantage in the fifth inning thanks to a power surge. Drew Romo launched a solo home run that barely cleared the outstretched glove of right fielder Jac Caglianone, and Chase Meidroth followed with a three-run shot off Stephen Kolek. But the Royals answered in the sixth, with Nick Loftin driving in a run with an RBI double against Tyler Schweitzer and later scoring on Maikel Garcia's single off Grant Taylor to knot the game.
Seranthony Domínguez (3-3) kept the Royals at bay with a perfect eighth inning, and Bryan Hudson closed the door with three straight outs to earn his second save of the season.
This comeback victory was business as usual for the White Sox, who have now rallied from behind in nine of their 20 wins this season. For the Royals, the loss marked their fourth defeat in six games after a promising five-game winning streak.
The game started with a bang from Kansas City's bats, as Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez each launched solo home runs in the first inning against White Sox starter Erick Fedde, who has now allowed 10 homers across six starts and two relief appearances this season.
Looking ahead, the series continues Wednesday with Royals right-hander Seth Lugo (1-2, 3.21 ERA) facing White Sox left-hander Noah Schultz (2-2, 4.68 ERA).
