The first day of the NJAC Track and Field Championships delivered unforgettable moments, setting the stage for an exciting continuation on May 6 at Morris Hills and Wallkill Valley. From personal bests to inspiring debuts, athletes across the conference showcased their grit and determination.
Pope John senior Tessa MacMullin turned in a performance for the ages. Waking up on May 5 with a feeling that something special was in store, she headed to Gifford Field in Rockaway ready to compete. In the triple jump, her teammates urged her to hold off—head coach Brian Corcoran was sprinting from the high jump area across the field. When he arrived, MacMullin delivered, launching a personal-best 36 feet, nine inches to secure first place. It was her first PR since indoor season of her junior year. "I saw him running over, and I knew it would be a good jump," she said. "No pressure, it was fun. I like people to watch me jump."
Morris Knolls senior Adair Para proved that it's never too late to discover a passion. Though she only started competing in track and field 18 months ago, she has already made a major impact. Coach Peter Staluppi first spotted her in the school hallways as a sophomore, telling her, "You look very strong." But Para didn't take the hint until last outdoor season. Now, she's a force to be reckoned with, taking first in the shot put (36-11) and eyeing the discus, where she's been excelling in practice. "I didn't really take it seriously until the end of last season," said Para, who plans to continue competing at High Point University. "I stay at practice really late, because it's so much fun."
Madison senior Rohan Tucker also made his mark, winning both the 100 and 400 meters, showing the kind of versatility that defines championship-caliber athletes. In the women's 100 meters, West Morris's Alanna Parkes edged out a tight field with a time of 12.71, while Pope John's Casey Carney took the 400 meters in 56.24.
With weather permitting, Day Two promises more thrilling action. Whether you're a seasoned competitor or a newcomer finding your stride, these championships remind us why track and field is a sport of heart, hustle, and unforgettable moments. Stay tuned for more highlights—and gear up for your own best performance with the right apparel to match your ambition.
