The Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball team just added some serious firepower to their roster—and it comes from an unexpected place. Bria Medina, a high-scoring point guard from Division III Knox College, has committed to the program, marking the fourth transfer-portal pickup for head coach Jan Jensen this offseason.
Medina isn't just any D-III player. Last season, she averaged a blistering 23.6 points per game, making her the second-leading scorer in all of Division III. At just 5-foot-6, she's a scoring machine who knows how to fill it up. Over 78 games at Knox, she piled up 1,524 points—good for a 19.5 career average. Her junior year highlights include five games with 30 or more points, including a career-high 40-point explosion against Illinois College, where she shot 12-of-18 from the field and 11-of-14 from the charity stripe.
But Medina is more than just a scorer. She shot 46.9% from the floor last season, knocked down 35.6% of her three-pointers, and was nearly automatic from the free-throw line at 86.9%, attempting nearly nine foul shots per game. She also contributed 5.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.7 steals per contest. That's the kind of all-around game that turns heads, even from a power conference like the Big Ten.
Of course, there's a major jump in competition from the Midwest Conference to the Big Ten. Medina's lone season at Iowa will be a test, but her scoring pedigree and versatility make her an intriguing addition. She joins fellow transfers Dani Carnegie and Jocelyn Faison (both from Georgia) and Oklahoma State wing Amari Whiting. As the roster stands, Medina and Whiting will be the only seniors on a squad that now has 10 players locked in for the 2026-27 season.
For Iowa fans, this is another sign that the program is reloading with talent—and taking some smart, creative swings in the transfer portal. Medina's journey from D-III star to Big Ten contributor is one to watch.
