The high school boys' volleyball playoffs are heating up across the City and Southern Sections, with thrilling matches and intense rivalries taking center stage. Here's a recap of Wednesday's action and a look at what's ahead.
In a nail-biting Open Division clash, top-seeded Granada Hills outlasted No. 8 Carson in a five-set marathon (23-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 15-10). The Highlanders showed championship grit, rallying from a 2-1 deficit to secure the win. No. 4 Venice also advanced, defeating No. 5 LA Marshall in four sets (25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 25-19), while No. 3 Chatsworth swept past No. 6 Wilmington Banning in straight sets (25-15, 25-20, 26-24).
Elsewhere, Windward edged Crescenta Valley in a competitive four-set match (25-18, 28-26, 23-25, 25-21), and Sunny Hills took down Northwood (25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 25-16). Crossroads battled past San Marino (25-16, 27-29, 25-21, 25-22), while Bishop Diego staged a comeback against Brea Olinda (23-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-19, 15-10). Western Christian also rallied from an early deficit to beat St. Anthony (22-25, 25-11, 25-18, 20-25, 15-8).
In other action, Temescal Canyon swept Santa Rosa Academy (25-16, 25-19, 25-23), and Palmdale Aerospace topped Glendale Adventist in three sets (25-23, 27-25, 25-19). Two matches were postponed: No. 13 Rancho Dominguez will face No. 4 Animo Watts at LA Adventist at 5:30 p.m., and No. 10 Animo De La Hoya travels to No. 7 Horace Mann UCLA Community.
Mark your calendars for the upcoming schedule: Quarterfinals for Divisions III-V are set for May 11; Semifinals for the Open Division and Division I take place on May 12; Semifinals for Divisions II-V follow on May 13; and all division finals will be held on May 15-16.
