The opening day of the 6A and 5A state track and field meets at BYU delivered thrilling action and standout performances on Thursday. With defending champions American Fork (6A) and Viewmont boys alongside Timpview girls (5A) looking to repeat, the competition was fierce from the start. Day 2 shifts focus to 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A teams on Friday, wrapping up the season in style.
In the boys' 3,200 meters, Herriman senior Jackson Spencer dominated with a winning time of 8:52.24, leading a strong pack that included three more Herriman runners in the top eight. American Fork sophomore Chase Hejny took second at 9:04.49, showing promise for the future.
The 4x200 relay saw Corner Canyon edge out Skyridge with a blistering 1:26.38, thanks to a powerful lineup of juniors and seniors. Herriman's depth shone again in the 4x800 relay, where they clocked 7:44.15 to outpace Davis and American Fork.
Field events were equally impressive. Lone Peak senior Matthew Bryant dominated the shot put with a massive 64'08.25 throw, then returned to win the discus at 176'04.0—a double victory that highlights his elite versatility. Syracuse junior Jace Cook was close behind in shot put at 63'07.5, while Davis throwers showed consistency across events.
In the javelin, Layton senior Trevor Cox claimed gold with a 180'05.0 toss, holding off Riverton's Luke Palmer and Max Barland. With more events to come, Friday's action promises even more drama as athletes chase state titles and personal bests.
