High school track and field: Top performances (Week 9 update) ... 6 new state records set at BYU Invite

Week 9 of the high school track and field season brought fireworks at the BYU Invitational, where six new state records were shattered in a single weekend. The annual meet continues to be a proving ground for Utah's elite athletes, and this year it delivered some of the fastest and farthest performances we've seen all season.

Out of the 38 combined boys and girls events contested in Utah, 23 of the best times recorded so far this season came from last week's BYU Invite alone. That's a staggering statistic that underscores just how electric the competition was.

On the boys' side, Weber's Josh Hamblin stole the spotlight with a pair of new hurdles state records, showcasing his dominance in the short sprints. Herriman's Jackson Spencer also made history, setting a new 800-meter state record and then teaming up with his relay squad to break the sprint medley relay state record. It was a double-header of excellence that had fans on their feet.

For the girls, Pine View's Kiera Sam Fong ended a 26-year drought by breaking the discus state record, a throw for the ages that rewrote the history books. Meanwhile, Snow Canyon's Amelia Nadauld proved she's still the one to beat in the 300 hurdles, breaking her own state record in the event.

Here's a snapshot of the top boys performances through nine weeks, highlighting the athletes who are setting the pace heading into the championship stretch:

100 Meters
10.47 - Davis DeGroot, Bonneville, Sr. (4/18 at Davis)
10.67 - Jenner Fulton, West Field, Sr. (4/18 at Davis)
10.69 - Porter Creasy, West Jordan, Sr. (4/18 at Davis)
10.71 - Ty Pringle, Manti, Sr. (4/25 at Mountain Valley)
10.72 - Enoch Johnson, Morgan, Sr. (3/28 at Taylorsville)
10.74 - Evan Morton, Alta, Sr. (4/25 at Mountain Valley)
10.75 - Will Peterson, Farmington, Sr. (5/2 at BYU)
Note: The state record stands at 10.36, set by Corner Canyon's Jerome Myles in 2024.

200 Meters
(SR) 20.68 - Davis DeGroot, Bonneville, Sr. (3/25 at Burchell)
21.34 - Josh Hamblin, Weber, Sr. (3/25 at Burchell)
21.46 - Briggs Parker, Skyridge, Sr. (4/24 at Orem)
21.49 - Lucas Nuttall, Timpview, Jr. (3/12 at Mountain View)
21.60 - Jordan Jensen, Viewmont, Sr. (4/10 at Woods Cross)

These results only include performances from UHSAA-sanctioned in-state meets, as organized by meettrax.com. Wind-aided times are excluded, and athletes are listed once per event even if they have multiple top-15 finishes.

With the state championships just around the corner, the momentum from the BYU Invitational is sure to carry these athletes to even greater heights. Whether you're tracking the record-breakers or the up-and-comers, this season is shaping up to be one for the ages.
