The 3A softball championship series is set for Thursday at BYU, and Wednesday's bracket play delivered all the drama, power, and resilience fans could ask for. Here's how the top teams punched their tickets to the title showdown.
Grantsville 11, Union 1 — Cowboys' Complete Game Clinches Title Shot
Top-seeded Grantsville continued its dominant run through the 3A tournament, combining lockdown defense with an explosive offensive breakout to defeat No. 3 Union 11-1 in the semifinals. After grinding out a 3-0 win over Logan on Tuesday, the Cowboys came alive at the plate Wednesday, tallying 10 base hits with six different players driving in runs.
"The defense showed up again two days in a row," said Grantsville coach Tony Cloward. "Our defense was great behind our pitcher. Our pitcher threw well again, but this time the addition was the sticks. Sticks finally came a little sooner, a little more often."
The standout performer was Hayden Bytheway, who delivered on both sides of the ball. She earned the win on the mound with three strikeouts and led the team with four RBIs, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a home run. It was a welcome surge for a team that struggled to bring runners home the day before.
"I think it's just reps," Cloward added. "The more at-bats we get, the better we're going to see those bats that we're typically used to seeing."
Grantsville now has a chance to capture its fourth consecutive state title and eighth championship in a decade when they take the field Thursday at BYU.
North Sanpete 15, Union 0 — Hawks Rally After Lightning Delay
In a game that was interrupted by a lightning delay, No. 2 North Sanpete showed incredible composure and firepower, erupting for an 11-run fourth inning to mercy-rule No. 3 Union 15-0 and secure their spot in the championship series against Grantsville.
The Hawks wasted no time making a statement. Lead hitter Makinley Burnside launched a home run on the very first pitch of the game, setting the tone for an electric evening at the plate. Kaecee Johnson was unstoppable, driving in five RBIs while hitting three of four.
The 30-minute lightning delay could have disrupted momentum, but the Hawks came back even stronger. "I said that the break was either going to be a blessing or a curse," shared one coach. In North Sanpete's case, it was pure blessing—they exploded for 11 runs after the pause to seal the mercy-rule victory.
With both teams bringing elite pitching and red-hot bats, Thursday's championship series at BYU promises to be a showdown for the ages. Will Grantsville extend its dynasty, or will North Sanpete complete its remarkable run? One thing's for sure: these athletes are ready to leave it all on the field.
