The 3A state softball tournament delivered a day of high drama and unforgettable performances, with Grantsville, Union, Logan, North Sanpete, Manti, and Emery all punching their tickets to Day 2. But no one shined brighter than Union's Haylee Moynier, who turned in a legendary doubleheader that will be talked about for years.
Moynier was simply unstoppable. She led the Cougars to a dominant 10-0 mercy-rule win over Richfield in their opener, then followed it up with a gritty 13-10 victory over No. 2 seed North Sanpete to advance to the semifinals. Her stat line reads like a video game: 6-for-7 at the plate with six RBIs, plus back-to-back wins in the circle with a staggering 20 strikeouts combined.
"Haylee's such a good pitcher that I think sometimes when a ball is in play, they get a little caught off guard," said Union coach Evah Taylor, acknowledging some uncharacteristic defensive lapses that made the game closer than she'd have liked. "My defense is better than that. It might look like we don't play a lot of balls because Haylee's a high strikeout pitcher, but my defense is still, I think, one of the best in 3A."
The offensive fireworks didn't stop with Moynier. Payzlei Parrish drove in three runs, and Teddy Oleen added two RBIs to keep the bats hot. It was a stunning turnaround from their late-April meeting with North Sanpete, when Union couldn't scratch across a single run in a 6-0 loss. "I tip my hat to their pitcher (Kaecee Johnson)," Taylor said. "She's a good pitcher. I think it was hot, she was a little tired, and we capitalized on it. We know hitting is contagious, and once we got rolling, it just goes through our lineup."
Meanwhile, Manti provided the day's most dramatic comeback story. After dropping their opener to North Sanpete, the Templars rallied for back-to-back elimination wins against Morgan and Richfield, capped by a 14-12 slugfest. A nine-run fourth inning nearly sealed the deal, but they had to fight off a furious Richfield rally to survive. "It feels really good," said Manti head coach Belinda Osborn. "It's been a couple of years since we've made it to the second day."
As the tournament shifts to Day 2, these six teams have proven they have the grit and firepower to make a deep run. For Union, it all starts with Moynier—a two-way superstar who shows no signs of slowing down.
