The roar of the crowd at BYU is set to echo with the crack of the bat as top-seeded San Juan storms into the 2A state championship game, ready to face perennial contender Enterprise. For a program that once dominated the diamond—claiming three state titles in six years—this resurgence feels like a long-awaited homecoming.
After a decade of quiet seasons, San Juan has roared back to life. The Broncos posted an impressive 24-2 regular-season record, earning the No. 1 seed and backing it up with three straight playoff wins. Their latest triumph came in a gritty 5-3 semifinal victory over Grand, setting the stage for a championship showdown on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
"San Juan was a dynasty for quite a while under Craig Swanson and Monte Lee and J.J. Squire," said Broncos coach Mike Bowers, now in his fifth year at the helm. "Then they moved to 3A and had some coaching changes, and it kind of fell into disrepair. It's taken us a bit to get back."
The Broncos wasted no time in the semifinal, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and extending it to 5-1 after two. Grand chipped away, cutting the lead to 5-3 by the fifth inning against pitcher Ella Stearns, who finished with five strikeouts. But relief pitcher Khatira Keith—a state champion wrestler earlier this school year—stepped in and held Grand scoreless over the final two innings, including a clutch pop-out with two runners in scoring position in the sixth.
"The thing we've been pressing the girls to do all year is reset," Bowers said. "Just reset, get onto the next play. Do your job on offense or defense. Something bigger than yourself. They did that well today."
Offensively, Madden Perkins, Kheirra Keith, and Colee Crofts drove in runs to lead the charge. Now, San Juan stands one win away from their first state championship since 2013—a testament to a program that refused to stay down.
