High school softball: Thursday’s 6A/5A Super Regionals Game 1 recaps

Thursday's opening games of the 6A/5A Super Regionals delivered plenty of drama, from late-inning comebacks to dominant shutouts. Here's a recap of the action on the diamond, where every win puts teams one step closer to the state tournament.

Bingham 17, Cedar Valley 11
No. 8 Bingham jumped out to an early lead and held off a furious Cedar Valley rally to take Game 1 of their best-of-3 series. Lily Gritton was the star of the show, going 1-for-4 at the plate and earning the win in the circle with four strikeouts. Cedar Valley showed fight, scoring four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome. These two teams will meet again Friday for Game 2.

Skyridge 11, Westlake 8
No. 10 Skyridge staged a comeback for the ages, erasing a four-run deficit after two innings to stun No. 7 Westlake. The Falcons erupted for five runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth, turning the game on its head. Eden Rose led the charge, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Callie Baker chipped in a hit and an RBI. Westlake got home runs from Devi Tuivai and Audrey Sherman, but four defensive errors proved costly. Game 2 is set for Friday.

Lehi 15, Lone Peak 0
No. 3 Lehi wasted no time asserting its dominance, scoring four runs in the first inning and seven more in the second to roll past No. 14 Lone Peak. Jaxie Medler was lights out in the circle, striking out six batters while allowing just two hits. The Pioneers' offense was relentless, and Lone Peak's three errors only made matters worse. Lehi will look to close out the series Friday.

Riverton 14, Layton 0
No. 1 Riverton lived up to its top billing, crushing No. 16 Layton in a mercy-rule victory. The Silverwolves scored early and often, plating two runs in the first, one in the second, and then breaking the game wide open with five in the third and six in the fourth. Zoe Hazlett was the offensive star, going 1-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Game 2 is Friday.

Herriman 15, Weber 0
No. 2 Herriman showed why it's a title contender, scoring in every inning to sweep past No. 15 Weber. Jaylee Hansen was a force at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a double and a triple. Aspyn Hawes also contributed, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. In the circle, Ashlyn Beratto was nearly unhittable, striking out nine batters while surrendering just one hit. The Mustangs will aim for the sweep Friday.

Davis 5, Farmington 0
No. 5 Davis relied on a balanced attack and solid pitching to shut out No. 12 Farmington. The Darts scored early and let their defense do the rest, keeping Farmington off the scoreboard throughout. With the win, Davis takes a 1-0 series lead heading into Friday's Game 2.
