Riverton hit .600 as a team to beat the Mustangs

In a game that started with an early home run against them, Riverton High School's softball team turned the tables in stunning fashion, delivering a 15-2 mercy rule victory over top-ranked Herriman on Tuesday. The win wasn't just another notch in the win column—it was a statement that the Silverwolves are ready to compete for a region championship.

The stakes couldn't have been higher. A loss would have ended Riverton's hopes for a region title. But after giving up a home run on the very first at-bat of the game, the Silverwolves showed the composure of seasoned champions.

"I feel like we couldn't have asked them to respond any better," said Riverton coach Whitley Haimin. "Softball, it's a seven-inning game. It's a long game. If someone hits a home run off of us, it's not the end of the world. That's what I love about this team. We could be down in a game, and you wouldn't be able to tell because of their composure."

And respond they did. Riverton wasted no time, loading the bases in the first inning with no outs. Peyton Sanchez delivered a clutch single to drive in two runs, and the momentum snowballed from there. The Silverwolves scored four runs in the first inning, three in the second, and eight in the fourth—an offensive explosion that left Herriman scrambling.

The numbers tell the story: Riverton hit an incredible .600 as a team, with seven players recording at least one RBI. Sophomore Grace Leary was the star of the show, batting a perfect 1.000 with three singles, a home run, and three RBIs. But she wasn't alone—Londyn Rentmeister, Kenzie Anderson, and Maggie Hamblin also hit 1.000 on the day.

"We were really mad that we lost the first time, so I think when we got to bat, our whole team just knew we were going to go hit and just come out really strong," Leary said. "We're feeling really confident, especially now after this game. I think we just started hitting really well. Hopefully, we keep it up."

Defensively, Riverton was just as dominant, shutting down Herriman after that early home run. The win avenged an earlier loss to the Mustangs in March, when Herriman allowed just one run. This time, the Silverwolves flipped the script in a big way, proving that resilience and teamwork can turn any game around.

For a team with championship experience, this victory is more than just a win—it's a reminder of what they're capable of when they play their game.
