Enterprise softball has done it again, capturing their fifth 2A state championship in the last eight seasons—and this one might be the sweetest yet. After a shaky start in the double-elimination tournament, the Wolves roared back with seven straight wins over three days to claim the title.
The turning point came Thursday afternoon, when Enterprise managed just one run in a 9-1 quarterfinal loss to South Sevier. It was a wake-up call for a team that, despite its talent, hadn't faced that kind of pressure before. "I think the first game, our nerves got the best of us," said head coach Katye Jones. "Most of them haven't played in a key role in a state tournament."
But Jones knew her squad had the firepower to bounce back. She challenged them to be more disciplined in every phase of the game, and the message stuck. The Wolves' bats exploded from that point forward, scoring double-digit runs in each of their next three games on Friday to claw their way back into contention.
Saturday's championship round at BYU's Gail Miller Field was a showdown with top-seeded San Juan, the only undefeated team left in the tournament. Enterprise needed two wins to take the crown—and they never trailed in 14 innings of play. In the first game, an eight-run sixth inning powered an 11-6 victory. In the second, the Wolves jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and held on for a 7-4 win to seal the championship.
Senior leader Mylee Platt said the quarterfinal loss was exactly what the team needed. "It lit a fire underneath us," she explained. "Every at-bat we're like, 'We got it, we got it, we got it,' and we just encouraged each other."
This title marks Enterprise's third championship in the past four years, a testament to the program's consistency and resilience. For a team that hadn't won seven straight games all season, they picked the perfect time to find their rhythm—and prove that sometimes, the hottest team wins it all.
