High school softball: Monday’s 5A Regionals Game 2 recaps

The 5A Regionals delivered a day of unforgettable comebacks and powerhouse performances as teams battled for a spot in next week's Super Regionals. From last-inning heroics to dominant offensive displays, Monday's games had everything a softball fan could ask for.

In one of the most dramatic games of the day, No. 19 Pleasant Grove kept their season alive with a thrilling 10-6 comeback win over No. 14 Fremont, forcing a decisive Game 3. Trailing 3-1 after the second inning, the underdogs erupted with three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth. Allyson Young was unstoppable at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double and a home run, while Lillian Whiting matched her with a 3-for-4 performance and drove in five crucial runs.

No. 16 Wasatch provided the day's most heart-stopping finish, rallying past No. 17 Olympus 14-12 to complete a 2-0 series sweep. The game swung wildly, with Olympus staging a furious comeback by scoring six runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by Charlotte Comer's home run. But Wasatch showed championship poise, answering with a two-run surge in the seventh to seal the victory. Payton Sunland went 3 for 3 with an RBI, while Brylee Smith delivered a 3-for-4 performance featuring a triple, home run, and two RBIs.

No. 9 Hillcrest left no doubt about their dominance, crushing No. 24 Woods Cross 18-7 to advance with a 2-0 series win. The Huskies came out swinging, building a 7-1 lead in the first inning before putting the game away with an eight-run explosion in the fourth. Bailey Terry was the star of the show, going 3 for 3 with five RBIs, four runs scored, and two home runs—a stat line that would make any softball player envious.

No. 13 Payson made quick work of No. 20 West, rolling to a 15-0 shutout victory and a 2-0 series sweep. The Lions built their lead methodically, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings before putting the game completely out of reach with a seven-run third. Ella Watkins dominated from the circle with four strikeouts, while Mahaila Buys provided the power with a home run and an RBI.

No. 12 Bountiful showed resilience in their 12-8 win over No. 21 West Jordan, completing a series sweep despite an early deficit. West Jordan jumped ahead with three runs in the first inning, but Bountiful answered with authority, breaking the game open with a six-run fourth inning. Peyton Orchard went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, while Dylan Carpenter earned the win with four strikeouts from the circle.

No. 15 Cyprus also advanced with a hard-fought 7-5 victory over No. 18, proving that in postseason softball, every pitch counts. As teams now set their sights on the Super Regionals, Monday's action reminded us why high school softball remains one of the most exciting sports to follow—where momentum can shift in an instant and heroes emerge when it matters most.
