In a jaw-dropping display of offensive firepower, two Alabama high school softball teams came within striking distance of a national record Monday night, combining for a staggering 89 total runs.
Amelia L. Johnson High School defeated Robert C. Hatch High School 55-34 in Thomaston, Alabama, in a game that saw runs scored at a blistering pace. The combined total fell just 10 runs short of tying the national record of 99 set just last month by Southwood and Huntington from Louisiana.
That record-setting game saw Southwood defeat Huntington 54-45, with the two teams combining for 99 runs—surpassing the previous mark of 95 set by Cuyama Valley and Coast Union from California back in 2011. Monday night's contest in Alabama came dangerously close to resetting the national record for the second time this season.
What makes these eye-popping numbers even more remarkable? The record-setting Louisiana game featured just 21 combined hits between both teams. According to reports, pitchers threw a total of 575 pitches, and an incredible 62 batters were hit by pitches. Southwood senior Addyson Patterson stole the show, driving in a game-high 14 runs.
On the mound, Southwood pitcher Sa'Derrica Lars showed incredible endurance, throwing all seven innings and an astonishing 296 pitches. She struck out 11 batters while walking 21 in a performance that will be remembered for its sheer volume as much as its effectiveness.
Robert C. Hatch High School, located in Uniontown, Alabama, represents a small but proud athletic program. With an enrollment of around 128 students, the Bobcats compete in football, basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball. The school has a rich sports tradition, particularly in boys' basketball, where they've captured multiple state titles over the years.
