Opening day for high school sports delivered the kind of drama that reminds us why we love the game. In a thrilling extra-inning battle, the Londonderry High School softball team, the two-time defending Division I champions, kicked off their title defense with a nail-biting 5-4 victory over Salem. The hero of the day was Paige Secor, whose deep walk-off triple in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Mady Normand and sent the Lancers home winners. Ace pitcher Elisabeth Kearney set the tone with a dominant 13-strikeout performance, while also contributing at the plate with two RBIs.
Meanwhile, over at Padden Field, the Manchester Memorial/Central Kings made a powerful statement in their own Division I opener, defeating Nashua North 11-6. Pitcher Elin Hill was virtually untouchable, racking up 16 strikeouts, while the Kings' offense exploded with five players notching at least two hits. Kianaly Gallego led the charge with a 4-RBI performance, including two doubles.
The action wasn't confined to the softball diamond. On the lacrosse field, Trinity started its season strong with an offensive showcase, while Derryfield's Maddy Paolino put on a scoring clinic with 8 goals. In boys volleyball, Pinkerton's Jacob Rice dished out an impressive 10 assists in a hard-fought match.
From walk-off triples to strikeout clinics and scoring barrages, it was a fantastic start to the season that showcased the incredible talent and competitive spirit of local high school athletes. These performances are a testament to the hard work and dedication that define high school sports.
