Park City’s girls golf team is on the cusp of history—just 18 holes away from capturing their first-ever state championship. But the road to glory won’t be easy, as three formidable challengers lurk within striking distance after Day 1 of the 4A state tournament at Glendale Golf Course.
The Miners posted a solid 329 team score in Wednesday’s opening round, but Juan Diego is hot on their heels with a 332, followed closely by Crimson Cliffs at 337 and Orem at 339. The stakes are high, especially with Crimson Cliffs and Juan Diego both entering as defending state champions—Crimson Cliffs topped 4A last year, while Park City claimed the 3A crown.
On the individual front, all eyes are on Crimson Cliffs senior Kate Walker, who fired a dazzling 4-under 68 to lead the field. She’s the only golfer alongside Orem’s Kaylee Westfall to finish under par, with Westfall carding a 1-under 71 after a clutch finish—birdieing three of her final five holes to stay within reach. Walker, a two-time state champion as a freshman and sophomore, is chasing her third title after finishing runner-up to Westfall last year. The two seniors are set for a thrilling rematch on Thursday.
Crimson Cliffs sophomore Brynlee Welch also made her mark, sitting third after a 1-over 73, keeping the pressure on the leaders. With the team and individual races both razor-thin, Day 2 promises drama from the first tee to the final putt.
