Morgan High School's girls golf team has something to celebrate—and it's not just the 3A state championship trophy. In a stunning final-round performance, senior Kenadee Benson delivered a near-flawless round to claim the individual medalist title, capping off an unforgettable day for the Trojans.
On the second day of the 3A state tournament, while most players saw their scores climb, Benson did the opposite. She fired a season-best 74, erasing a five-stroke deficit from the opening round. That score pulled her into a tie for first place, setting the stage for a dramatic playoff on the par-4 ninth hole.
With the pressure on, Benson calmly rolled in an eight-foot birdie putt to secure the win. Her teammates mobbed her on the green, celebrating a victory that seemed unlikely just 24 hours earlier.
"I was kind of in shock," Benson admitted. "I putted well today—especially on the front nine. I've made those putts a million times, so I knew I could do it if I put the right stroke on it."
After shooting a 79 on Wednesday, Benson sat in seventh place, trailing three of her own Morgan teammates. But rather than feeling pressure, that position allowed her to play freely. "I was just trying to stay positive and play well so my team could win," she said. "Whatever happened individually would happen."
Her mindset paid off. When she walked off the 18th green, she learned she was tied with Richfield freshman Hailey Hair, both finishing at 9-over 153. While waiting for the final groups to finish, Benson kept loose on the putting green, preparing for a potential playoff.
In the playoff, Benson won the coin flip and chose her hybrid for safety, landing short left of the green. Hair went with driver but pushed her ball right of the bunker. Both chipped to nearly identical spots—eight feet behind the hole. Hair putted first, missing just left, and Benson stepped up to seal the win.
The individual title was the cherry on top of a team championship that showcased Morgan's depth and resilience. For Benson, the moment was surreal—a senior leading her team to glory with a round she'll never forget.
