The stakes were high on Day 1 of the 6A state tournament, and four teams proved they have what it takes to compete for the title. Lehi, Bingham, Lone Peak, and Mountain Ridge all punched their tickets to the semifinals with impressive performances.
Top-seeded Lehi showed exactly why they're the team to beat. After sweeping Westlake in the first round, the Pioneers followed it up with a clean 3-0 victory over Cedar Valley to secure their spot in the semis. Coach Kolby Shewell praised his team's mental toughness, saying, "If they are playing with energy and excitement, they're tough to beat."
Cedar Valley pushed Lehi hard, forcing close finishes in sets two and three with scores of 25-22 and 25-23. But the Pioneers stayed composed when it mattered most. A big reason for their success? Outside hitter Ashton Shewell, who delivered a dominant 21 kills with a .405 hitting efficiency in the quarterfinals. His father and coach noted that Ashton's focus on efficiency this season has been a game-changer: "He is the most determined kid."
Lehi's path to the semis marks their second consecutive trip, and they're hungry for more after falling to eventual champion Bingham in last year's semifinals. This time, as the top seed, they have a real shot at making their first-ever championship appearance.
Meanwhile, No. 5 Mountain Ridge had to dig deep to secure their 3-0 sweep over Region 2 rival Herriman. Leading 23-19 in the third set, the Sentinels nearly let the match slip away as Herriman fought back to tie it 28-28. But Mountain Ridge found their resolve and closed it out. Coach Bryan Nicholson knew the danger: "That lead isn't safe because they're fighting for their lives."
With these four powerhouses advancing, the 6A semifinals promise to be a showcase of the best high school volleyball in the state. Whether you're a player, coach, or fan, this is the kind of action that makes the tournament unforgettable.
