The stage is set for history in the 2A boys volleyball state championship, as top-seeded Salt Lake Academy and American Heritage will clash in the classification's first-ever title match. Both teams earned their spots with commanding performances in Friday's semifinals.
Salt Lake Academy lived up to its billing as the No. 1 seed, going a perfect 6-0 on the day and capping it with a dominant 3-0 sweep of Maeser Prep. The Griffins were in control from start to finish, never allowing Maeser Prep to score more than 19 points in any set. "We came in with good energy this morning, which is always good for the first day of playoffs," said Salt Lake Academy coach Brogan Johnson. "I think we could have passed a bit better, but our outsides took care of the ball today and we moved past errors that could have gotten us caught up." Elijah Johnson led the Griffins with six kills, while Brock Rhoades and Takeo Derby each added five.
This season marks the first for 2A volleyball, and Salt Lake Academy—a former 3A program—is making the most of its new home. Last year, the Griffins fell in the 3A quarterfinals to Morgan, but now they're one win away from etching their names in the history books. "We're just super excited," Johnson said. "This is a place we haven't been yet, and we've been trying to get here for the past years. It's rewarding to finally get to that stage and be where we need to be for the last game of the season."
American Heritage's path to the final was a bit more dramatic. After dropping the first set 25-23 to Draper APA, the Patriots regrouped and stormed back to win the next three sets, securing a 3-1 victory. "I think they came in a little tentative," said American Heritage coach Brad Castle. "We talked about focusing on our game and playing our tempo and staying within our system. Once they did that, things looked a lot brighter for us." Outside hitters Dallin Castle and Peter Jacobson led the offense, while setter Lincoln Ericson orchestrated the attack.
Despite losing only three matches in the regular season, American Heritage suffered a 3-0 defeat to Maeser Prep—the same team Salt Lake Academy swept in the semifinals. Coach Castle said that loss proved to be a valuable lesson. "Believe it or not, we learned a ton from that loss," Castle said. "Those guys learned the importance of coming in strong and aggressive."
Now, with both teams riding momentum and hungry for the first 2A state championship, Saturday's final promises to be an unforgettable showdown.
