The high school boys lacrosse postseason is heating up, and Tuesday's first-round action in the 6A, 5A, and 4A classifications delivered plenty of drama, dominant performances, and statement wins. Here's a recap of the key matchups that have set the stage for an exciting second round.
6A First Round: Cedar Valley Rallies Past Layton
In a clash of underdogs, No. 16 Cedar Valley rode a stellar performance from Kaleb Davis to a 16-8 victory over No. 17 Layton. Davis was unstoppable, netting seven goals and adding an assist, while the defense—led by Jake Huffaker and Nixon Caldwell—forced multiple turnovers to keep Layton off balance. The win sends Cedar Valley into a daunting second-round matchup against top-seeded Corner Canyon. Layton fought hard but couldn't close the gap against Cedar Valley's relentless pace.
5A First Round: Spanish Fork Dominates, Olsen Makes History
No. 14 Spanish Fork delivered a masterclass, dismantling No. 19 Fremont 17-2. Senior Austin Olsen stole the show with six goals, cracking the top 10 all-time for career goals in the process. Junior Caleb Grant chipped in two goals and an assist, while freshman goalie Gage James was a wall in net, posting an impressive 84% save percentage. The Dons' defense forced 20 takeaways, setting up a second-round showdown with No. 3 Alta.
Pleasant Grove Advances with Gritty Win
Pleasant Grove secured a 10-4 victory over Salem Hills in a nonregion matchup, advancing to the second round of the 5A tournament. Liam Stott led the Vikings' offense with two goals and one assist, while Deegan Ash added a goal, five ground balls, and a forced turnover. The balanced attack and solid defense will be tested next when Pleasant Grove faces No. 7 Judge Memorial.
Payson Powers Past Woods Cross
No. 13 Payson used a dominant second half to pull away from No. 20 Woods Cross, winning 10-4 in a region battle. Scott Rasmussen paced the Lions with three goals, while Austin Ewell contributed a goal and three assists. Goalkeeper Talan Hardy was clutch with 10 saves, anchoring a defense that stifled Woods Cross down the stretch. Payson now sets its sights on No. 4 Wasatch in the next round.
Northridge Shuts Out Maple Mountain
No. 16 Northridge turned in a defensive masterpiece, blanking No. 17 Maple Mountain 10-0 in the 5A first round. Senior Micah Olsen led the charge with four goals and two assists, while sophomore Brekken Green added two goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Daxton Kendall was perfect between the pipes, recording eight saves for the shutout. The win sets up an intriguing second-round clash for Northridge, as they look to keep their momentum rolling.
