In a thrilling finish at Rose Park Golf Course, the Wayne Badgers captured their first-ever 1A boys golf state title, rallying past region rival Milford in dramatic fashion. After trailing much of Wednesday's final round, Wayne surged over the last four holes, playing them nine strokes better than Milford to secure a two-day team score of 643—five shots ahead of the runner-up Badgers at 648.
The victory was especially sweet for a program that started just six years ago. Coach Mike Hinkle, visibly emotional, reflected on the journey: "We practice on a baseball field and pick up shag balls. Our kids drive an hour to a golf course. This group grew up playing middle school golf because my assistant coach and I are obsessed with the game." Hinkle's pride was palpable, especially with his son Miles—a senior—on the team.
Wayne had finished runner-up in the 1A state tournament each of the previous two years, and for much of the back nine, history seemed poised to repeat itself. But Hinkle kept his team focused on what they could control: attitude and routine. "Chin up, shoulders back, walk tall all day long," he told them, a mantra that paid off when it mattered most.
The Badgers' depth was on full display, with all four top golfers finishing in the top 12. Senior Miles Hinkle tied for second overall, while sophomore Canyon Daley—who fired a brilliant 73 on Day 1—finished fourth. Sophomore Blake Peterson tied for eighth, and Gage New placed 12th, narrowly missing his first-ever sub-80 round with a birdie putt on No. 18.
Individually, the day belonged to Milford's Rhett Barnes, who comfortably claimed medalist honors. But the team trophy—and the story of a resilient program that built its success from humble beginnings—belonged to Wayne. It's a reminder that in golf, as in life, the final four holes can change everything.
