Grantsville’s 6-4 come-from-behind win over Carbon wasn’t the prettiest, but when it comes to playoff baseball, winning and moving on is all that matters. “Carbon is a great team, and we knew it was going to be a battle, but I’m proud of our guys for being able to bounce back when their backs were against the wall,” said Grantsville head coach Trevor Thornton. After outscoring its opponents 39-1 through the first few games of the 3A state tournament, Grantsville found itself in some adversity, a position it hasn’t been in very often this season as it trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

In the high-stakes world of playoff baseball, sometimes the grittiest wins are the most memorable. That was certainly the case for Grantsville, who mounted a stunning 6-4 come-from-behind victory over Carbon to move one step closer to a 3A state title.

"Carbon is a great team, and we knew it was going to be a battle," said Grantsville head coach Trevor Thornton. "But I'm proud of our guys for being able to bounce back when their backs were against the wall. That's what playoff baseball is all about—it's exciting, it's stressful, and you gotta dig deep and find ways to win."

The Cowboys entered the game on an absolute tear, having outscored their opponents 39-1 through the early rounds of the tournament. But adversity struck fast. Trailing 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, Grantsville found itself in unfamiliar territory—a position they've rarely faced all season.

That's when the magic happened. After a single up the middle from Jordan Fawson, senior Easton Hammond stepped to the plate. Coaches signaled for a bunt, and Hammond didn't hesitate. What followed was arguably the play of the game: he turned that simple bunt into a triple, sparking a rally that would change everything.

"If you told me before the game that I would get a triple off a bunt I wouldn't have believed it," Hammond said with a big smile. "I was secretly hoping coach would let me hit it out of the park, but that was just as good."

Patton Rose followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Hammond and cutting the deficit to 4-2. The floodgates opened from there. Grantsville added four more runs in the fourth inning to take their first lead of the game—and they never looked back. Rose delivered again with a bases-loaded single to left, and Karter Reed followed with a single to right, bringing in two runs for a 5-4 lead. A wild pitch then allowed Guhner Kimber to steal home, extending the advantage to 6-4.

Carbon had the second-seeded Cowboys on the ropes early, scoring two runs in the second inning and two more in the third for a quick 4-0 lead. The Dinos got some help from Grantsville's defense, which dropped two fly balls to keep innings alive and momentum rolling. Logan Bennett led Carbon's charge, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Brody Ware also contributed at the plate.

But in playoff baseball, it's not always about the prettiest win—it's about finding a way to survive and advance. For Grantsville, this gritty comeback might just be the momentum they need to bring home the title.
