After three heartbreaking defeats in the state title series over the past four years, Hernando softball finally broke through to claim the MHSAA Class 7A championship in dramatic fashion. The Lady Tigers defeated Ocean Springs 9-7 in Game 3 on May 15 at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg, a venue that had been the site of so much recent disappointment.
Since winning the state championship in 2021, Hernando had suffered crushing losses in the title series in 2022, 2024, and 2025. That painful history fueled a determined comeback this season. "Well, to come in here the last two years and lose that'll fire you up," said head coach Nicki Whitten. "These kids have been a part of the good and the tough."
Junior Graycin Higginbotham admitted that a sour taste lingered after those recent results, while shortstop Jayla Sites hinted that the team knew they needed to put in extra work during the offseason. That dedication paid off when it mattered most.
With the series tied at one game apiece, Hernando (32-5) erupted for five runs in the sixth inning to seize control against Ocean Springs (29-11). The Lady Tigers' resilience and offensive firepower proved too much for the Greyhounds, turning past pain into championship glory. For a program that knows both triumph and heartbreak, this title is a testament to perseverance and teamwork.
