The NCHSAA track and field championships took center stage at the Marcus T. Johnson Track and Field at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, delivering a week of electrifying performances from May 13–16. Athletes from Cleveland, Gaston, and Lincoln counties made their mark, showcasing the depth of local talent across multiple classifications.
The action kicked off with Classes 2A and 4A on May 13, followed by 1A and 3A on May 14. Classes 5A and 7A hit the track on May 15, and the season concluded with 6A and 8A on May 16. Here’s a look at the standout athletes and teams from the region.
Stuart Cramer’s Jayden Nolley blazed to a state title in the 400-meter dash, clocking an impressive 48.99 seconds. Teammate Kailyn Campbell added to the Storm’s success with third-place finishes in both the 100-meter (12.38 seconds) and 200-meter dashes (25.43 seconds).
Mountain Island Charter emerged as a powerhouse, with the boys’ team finishing second overall (82 points), trailing only Corvian Community (137 points). The Raptor girls also secured runner-up status with 91 points, 48 behind the state champions. The boys’ 4x100-meter relay team captured gold in 42.55 seconds, while the 4x200-meter (1:28.81) and 4x800-meter (8:14.16) relays both took silver. Javon Boyd earned a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.34 seconds), and Cameron Gaston was a force, winning the 300-meter hurdles (38.96 seconds) and placing second in the 100-meter dash (10.98 seconds), third in the 110-meter hurdles (14.63 seconds), and fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.50 seconds). Brady Goodwin cleared 12 feet for third in the pole vault.
On the girls’ side, Ajuliah Washington soared to a state title in the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches) and took second in the 100-meter dash (12.37 seconds). The girls’ 4x100-meter relay team struck gold in 48.15 seconds, and the 4x200-meter relay squad followed suit with a winning time of 1:43. Additionally, the Cherryville 4x200-meter relay team placed fourth (1:30.31).
