West Warwick boys volleyball is making a statement this season—and it’s one that could echo in the school’s history books.
The Wizards are on a mission, and Thursday’s 3-0 sweep (25-21, 26-24, 25-20) of Westerly was more than just another win. It was a message. West Warwick has been dominant in Division II, dropping only three sets in league play all spring. With 10 wins already in the books before May, the team is showing it’s built for a deep postseason run.
For context, the Wizards have only reached double-digit wins twice in the last nine seasons. Last year’s 13-win campaign ended in the quarterfinals—against these same Bulldogs. So when West Warwick stepped onto the court in Westerly on April 30, the energy was personal.
“It just feels good to come in here,” said Colin Kelly. “We lost in the playoffs to them, so to come back, you know you’re going to get a good game. You get the whole team hyped and the crowd involved, and we were mad that we lost. We just had to do what we had to do.”
That fire showed. After a tight second-set rally, the Wizards took control in the third frame, closing out the match with confidence and grit. The only blemish on their record so far? A loss to Division I’s Cranston West earlier in the week.
West Warwick’s boys volleyball program dates back to at least 1991 and has been a fixture in the Rhode Island Interscholastic League since 2000. The Wizards have made semifinal appearances over the years, but a championship berth has always been just out of reach. This year feels different.
“Going into the game we knew that Westerly was our biggest opponent,” said Alex Osmena. “We just had a fire going in and our whole team was just ready to work. It would be generational to win a championship with this team. This is already a year to remember, so we have that going for us, but it would be crazy.”
With momentum on their side and a hungry roster behind them, the Wizards aren’t just playing for wins—they’re playing for history. And if this season is any indication, they’re well on their way.
