Rain may have washed away most of Wednesday's high school sports schedule across Rhode Island, but the games that did go on were worth getting wet for. And no contest delivered more drama than the Smithfield girls lacrosse team's clash with Scituate.
The Sentinels came into this matchup undefeated and seemingly untouchable, but Division IV's Scituate Spartans had other plans. For an entire quarter, Smithfield couldn't find the back of the net. The Spartans' defense was suffocating, and goalie Lainey Nelson was in peak form, recording her 600th career save in the first quarter alone. After 12 minutes of play, the scoreboard still read 0-0.
Then came Lexi Johnson-McMahon. The Smithfield star flipped the script in the second quarter, scoring three of her game-high five goals to spark a 9-5 victory. The turning point was electric: Johnson-McMahon won the draw, the offense went to work, and Emma Tuetken finally broke the deadlock just over a minute into the second quarter. Seconds later, Johnson-McMahon added another.
Grace Young joined the action near the midway point, but Scituate's Grace Jacavaone answered to keep the Spartans within striking distance. Then Johnson-McMahon took over. She scored to make it 4-1, won the ensuing draw, and raced downfield to score again just 10 seconds later. That sequence put the game out of reach, keeping Smithfield's perfect season intact.
For any athlete who's ever faced a tough opponent or bad weather, this game is a reminder that champions are made when conditions aren't perfect. Whether you're a lacrosse player or just love the game, gear up for your next challenge with apparel that performs as hard as you do.
